Effects of the density perturbation in scattering

چکیده
[1] The influence of density variation on scattering is investigated in terms of attenuation, coda level, and apparent frequency shift. The influence of density variations is to producemore scattered energy than for velocity perturbations alone with a consequently higher coda level. The temporal decay of the coda is reduced, so that high perturbations in density are associated with a long duration of coda. These effects are particularly important for media with small-scale heterogeneity. Thus inversions for heterogeneity parameters, based on the character of precursors and coda of seismic phases penetrating deep into the Earth, need to take into account the nature of the density variations as well as wave speed variations.

Replacing the wormhole geometry with an equivalent medium using the perturbation theory of scattering and the Born approximation, we have calculated the differential scattering cross section of electromagnetic waves by a traversable wormhole. It is shown that scattering at long wavelenghts can essentially distinguish wormhole from ordinary scattering object. Some of the zeros of the scatterin...
متن کاملScattering from elastic sea beds: first-order theory.
A perturbation model for high-frequency sound scattering from an irregular elastic sea bed is considered. The sea bed is assumed homogeneous on the average and two kinds of irregularities are assumed to cause scattering: roughness of the water-sea bed interface and volume inhomogeneities of the sediment mass density and the speeds of compressional and shear waves. The first-order small perturba...

The effects of including incoherent (bound-electron) and coherent (Rayleigh) scattering in exposure buildup factor calculations for point isotropic gamma ray sources, penetrating a two-layer water-lead shield have been investigated in the gamma ray energy (E?) range of 40 keV to 3 MeV. Incoherent scattering decreases the values of these factors in both layers up to E? ~ 200 keV and the effect i...
متن کاملA Study on free convective heat and mass transfer flow through a highly porous medium with radiation, chemical reaction and Soret effects
The paper addresses the effects of Soret on unsteady free convection flow of a viscous incompressible fluid through a porous medium with high porosity bounded by a vertical infinite moving plate under the influence of thermal radiation, chemical reaction, and heat source. The fluid is considered to be gray, absorbing, and emitting but non-scattering medium, and Rosseland approximation is consid...
